SEND Curriculum

At Fishburn Primary School, we are ambitious for all of our pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). We want every child to access a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum which prepares them for the next stage of their education.

We aim for our pupils to become independent, confident and successful learners who have high aspirations, develop a love of learning and achieve their potential.

An Inclusive and Ambitious Curriculum

Meeting the needs of pupils with SEND is the responsibility of all staff.

Children with SEND access the same ambitious curriculum as their peers wherever appropriate. Teachers consider individual needs when planning and delivering learning and make appropriate adaptations to enable pupils to access, participate in and make progress through the curriculum.

This may include adaptations to teaching, resources, communication, the learning environment, levels of adult support or the way in which children demonstrate their learning.

Our SENDCo supports staff to identify needs, plan appropriate provision and review its impact.

Universal Provision and Adaptive Teaching

High-quality, inclusive teaching is the starting point for all pupils.

Teachers use their knowledge of individual children to make appropriate adaptations while maintaining high expectations. Support is designed to enable pupils to become increasingly independent rather than creating unnecessary dependence on adults.

Assessment is used to identify strengths, misconceptions and gaps in knowledge so that teaching can respond appropriately.

Targeted Support and Intervention

Some pupils may require additional or different support alongside their classroom teaching.

Where appropriate, targeted interventions or additional support may be provided to address an identified need or barrier to learning.

This provision is planned according to the individual needs of pupils and its impact is monitored and reviewed. Support may be adapted, continued or concluded depending on the progress being made.

Specialist and Personalised Provision

Some children with more complex or significant needs may require specialist or highly personalised provision.

Where appropriate, we work with external professionals and services, which may include Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Educational Psychology and other specialist services.

Recommendations from professionals are considered alongside the views of the child, their family and school staff when planning appropriate provision.

For children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), provision is planned and reviewed in accordance with the outcomes and provision identified within their plan.

Assess, Plan, Do, Review

Our approach to supporting children with SEND follows the graduated approach:

Assess → Plan → Do → Review

We identify a child's strengths and needs, plan appropriate support, put that support in place and review its impact.

Children and their parents or carers are involved in this process, and provision is adjusted where appropriate in response to progress and changing needs.

Working in Partnership

We recognise that successful SEND provision depends upon strong relationships between school, children, families and other professionals.

Our SENDCo, Miss Hannah Robertson, works with teachers, support staff, families and external professionals to help ensure that appropriate provision is in place for pupils with SEND.

Further information about our approach can be found in our SEND Policy and SEND Information Report.
