School Holidays During Term Time

Generally, the DfE does NOT consider a need or desire for a holiday (or any other absence for leisure and recreation) to be an exceptional circumstance (Working Together to Improve School attendance 2024).

Parents should complete a Leave of Absence Form (Appendix), which they may obtain from the school office. This form should be returned to school prior to the child’s absence. Consideration will be given to the request and this will be followed by a call and a letter approving or declining the request.

Under the new national framework, all schools will be required to consider a fine when a child has missed 10 or more sessions (5 days) for unauthorised reasons. From August 2024, the fine for school absences across the country will be £80 if paid within 21 days, or £160 if paid within 28 days.

If you’re required to attend court because your child hasn’t been attending school, you could receive a fine of up to £2,500.

Only 2 penalty notices can be issued to the same parent, for the same child, within a 3-year rolling period. Any second notice within that period will be at the higher rate of £160 per child (if paid within 28 days). A third occurrence of absence may meet legal threshold and legal enforcement action may be taken.

Please contact the school if you wish to discuss this with the Headteacher.
